GNBGC Endorses Reg Buxton

The Greater Naples Better Government Committee has made its endorsements in the races for Districts 1, 3 and 5 for the Collier County School Board.

The committee endorsed incumbent Pat Carroll in District 1, Naples Journals Publisher Reg Buxton in District 3 and retired Naples Police detective Joe Whitehead in District 5.

The committee's Board of Directors felt that these three candidates best exhibited the energy and foresight needed to deal with the issues facing the Collier County public schools.

Committee President Dave Trecker said the candidates were chosen after the Greater Naples Better Government Committee examines their records, meets with the candidates to discuss campaign issues and debates who should be the chosen candidate.

Taking A Stand

Editor, Daily News:

I read with dismay the story of what was done to Collier County Commission candidate Georgia Hillers campaign sign.

What was done is deplorable and unacceptable. We cannot have this sort of activity going on in our community. It is against all that Americans stand for.

I gladly offer my assistance in any way to help catch the perpetrators of this egregious act.

As citizens of Collier County, we cannot allow hate to become a part of our democratic process.

Students Can Do Better

Editor, Daily News:

Rob Garvie, a teacher at Naples High School, wrote a guest commentary in the Daily News about establishing a student honor code. In actuality, what he said was more like re-establishing the code that once was the means we all understood as the basis for judging just how our communities were doing in raising children as upstanding citizens for the future. Some used to call the result moral fiber.I say bravo for Garvie's efforts!I support him and look forward to collaborating with him and other like minded citizens to bring this change about. This is an area of concern that we, as citizens, can communicate freely about without being presumed that a Collier County School Board member is micromanaging or subverting the superintendent's authority. If elected, I would be happy to collaborate with Garvie and (hopefully) as many like-minded citizens as possible; we are all members of this community, Collier County, and need to actively assist each other to bring about changes that help our children grow in stature. It is time that we stop the degradation of our moral values by those who would have society free and open to do just about anything that happens to cross their minds. While that might be considered OK for adults, it surely cannot be right for children.

Simple solution - pay the fine

Dear Editor:

Very soon all Collier County residents will begin to see a startling increase in their school taxes; even renters will be faced with increases to cover the cost of the class-size amendment to our Florida Constitution made a number of years ago.

Plainly put, the law says that in 2010 all children must be educated in much smaller classes, the maximum at the earliest grades being 18 students.

Great idea, maybe, as long as we can afford it. Can we?

The school district at its last operations subcommittee advisory board meeting informed the public what the costs are to comply with state law: about $17.6 million in new costs to start with, including hiring 216 new teachers (on a one-year contract) for $14.6 million, and $3 million more for portable classrooms to assure there are 239 classrooms for those teachers.

Quite a jump in cost!

There is serious talk about doing away with the mandate, but that requires a 60 percent vote in favor and the matter getting on the ballot. Failing that, the mandate goes into effect.

With the economic conditions seemingly getting worse, not better, in Florida, no one believes that the state can finance these costs, let alone the basic requirements it imposes.

So... what to do?

Pay the fine instead. Outside-the-box thinking, yes, but a way to avoid an incredible cost overall that we should not be asked to bear at this time. In hopes that the amendment will be altered or eliminated, this is a small price to pay as opposed to taking another hit that could break this county.

Help is coming

Editor, Daily News

Publishes January 15, 2010

The Collier County Chapter of the American Red Cross is responding to the devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti. Monetary donations are being accepted in order to purchase the items needed water, tarps, tents, food, medical supplies, etc.

Red Cross workers are on the ground, assessing those needs. The Red Cross also had disaster-relief supplies stored at a warehouse in Panama, and those items are on their way.

We are not sending local disaster volunteers at this time. Each day will bring a new assessment of the situation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our local Haitian citizens and for their families and friend.

Donations can be mailed to the American Red Cross, 2610 Northbrooke Plaza Drive, Naples, 34119. You can call the regional chapter with a credit card donation at (239) 596-6868 or go online to www.redcross.org to make a donation or for more information.

Americans always respond to those in need throughout the world. This truly is one of those times.

Your much-needed help will be greatly appreciated.

Buxton Speaks Publicly on Class Size Amendment

Letter to the editor printed in the Naples Daily News

December 8, 2009

Collier County School Board District 3 candidate Reg Buxton, who has advocated for paying the fine, said he believes the option should still be considered.

"It's a lot of money and it is a lot of money we don't have right now," he said of the options presented to the subcommittee. "I didn't hear anything that said we would lose our funding. ... I just think we need to think outside the box."
